EAT LOVE. Tomorrow’s Food and Food Spaces

A joint project by the Vienna Business Agency and the MAK

The nomadic studio mobil / think tank station is touring through Vienna for the duration of the Biennale to provide a view into the future of our nutrition. Under the motto “Let's talk food”, the VBA is analysing the entire food cycle – from the fields to the shops and, finally, to our plates – to explore how urban food supplies might look in future.

Therefore, in keeping with the overall theme of this year’s Vienna Biennale, the topic chosen by the Vienna Business Agency is EAT LOVE. Tomorrow’s Food and Food Spaces.

In response to a specific challenge, the Viennese creative scene has developed ecological and socially sustainable solutions for the ever-continuing transformation processes identifiable in our diets, our consumer behaviour and associated methods of production. The best ideas will be showcased for three days and three nights at the Vienna Biennale, at various locations in Vienna and at Vienna Design Week.

The dialogue surrounding the urgent issues of food supplies will continue with a symposium Planet Matters Symposium.

Curatorial Team: Elisabeth Noever-Ginthör, Alice Jacubasch (Vienna Business Agency); Astrid Böhacker (MAK)

This is biodiverse land covered with vineyards, forests, overgrown scrubland, wasteland, and fallow. The land will be used for THE DISSIDENT GODDESSES’ NETWORK—a research project at the Academy of Fine Arts—as a laboratory for an investigation in the sense of contemporary Eco Art and deep ecology practice. A Mongolian yurt on a Palaeolithic site near Alberndorf serves as an in-situ parliament for encounters, projects, storytelling, and community teaching. The aim is to facilitate measures against climate change: targeted planting, water detection, improvement of humus.

The consequences of the global climate crisis are still abstract and diffuse for many people. With their work, the artist duo makes the effects of the global climate catastrophe visible and comprehensible for viewers in the Viennese urban space at Karlsplatz. A glance through binoculars - and a virtually animated flood scenario is reversed.

The media sculpture on Karlsplatz will be open to the public for the entire duration of the Vienna Biennale for Change 2021, daily from 12:00–dawn.

ECO FLIRT

An exhibition by students of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Class of Elisabeth von Samsonow, co-curated by Kate Strain

This exhibition starts with the simple theory that art specializes in perception.

This exhibition starts with the simple theory that art specializes in perception. So what form of perception is needed to respond appropriately to the ecological and climate crisis? How can art capture, represent, and project the intertwining of subject and milieu? What forms of mapping can art develop when it comes to sketching out a new concept of “environment”? In this exhibition, several groups of students from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna focus on different levels and dimensions of the perception of environments and present their results and proposals. The show highlights both very empathetic and molecular mappings, reactions, and translations of internal and external environments.

MAK FUTURE LAB: DIGITAL & CIRCULAR

LEARNING AND LIVING CIRCULAR SOCIETY

Vor dem Hintergrund der Ausstellung DIGITAL & CIRCULAR organisiert das MAK ein MAK FUTURE LAB, bei dem Ansätze für eine digital unterstützte Transformation zur Kreislaufgesellschaft erörtert werden.

Against the background of the exhibition DIGITAL & CIRCULAR, the MAK has organized a MAK FUTURE LAB to debate approaches for a digitally supported transformation towards circular society. A top-class panel will discuss, among others, the following questions: Which primary systemic change is needed for a circular society? How can we prevent the great transformation of economy and society from leading to an enormous additional accumulation of material? In which areas would circular economy be particularly important? Which would be the three most urgent digital innovations to lend key importance to biological and technical cycles? How can we accelerate the transition from glass consumers to transparent cycle-oriented companies by means of digital innovations? How can we as a society learn circular thinking in the best and fastest way? How can we live circular society in everyday life and how should human-machine-interfaces be designed to optimally use the power of innovation for this purpose?

Adrien Missika “Unkrautpflege [Weed Care]”

MAK FUTURE LAB | Utopian Activism

Keynote and collective action by and with Adrien Missika
Bring your own watering can!

With his “Unkrautpflege [Weed Care]” project, in 2018 artist Adrien Missika initiated a three-part work that draws our attention to spontaneously growing, often overlooked, vegetation in the urban landscape, thus sharpening our awareness of the city’s biodiversity.

Take a watering can
Fill it with water
Go out on the street
Walk down one way
WATER ALL THIRSTY WEEDS
Refill the can wherever possible
Go on until tired or hungry

With these simple instructions, Misska offers an artistic approach to climate protection and at the same time appeals to each one of us to play an active role.

After explaining his artistic praxis in a keynote address in the MAK Lecture Hall, Missika invites all visitors to devote their full attention to neglected plants along the city’s sidewalks and housefronts and to share their experiences on social media under #unkrautpflege. The starting point is the Wotrubapromenade by the Stubenbrücke, directly behind the MAK.

The video documentation of Unkrautpflege (2018-ongoing; action first performed by the artist in Berlin, 4K color video, sound, 7:06 min.) as well as subsequent actions: Cura (2019-ongoing; action first performed by the artist in Mexico City, Mexico; HD video, sound, 5:56 min.) and Pioneer’s Treat (2020-ongoing; first performed by the artist in 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal, 4K color video, sound, 7:22 min., courtesy Galeria Francisco Fino, Lisbon, & Proyectos Monclova, Mexico City) may be seen as a three-part installation in the VIENNA BIENNALE exhibition CLIMATE CARE: Reimagining Shared Planetary Futures in the MAK Exhibition Hall.

What is a forest? When is a forest?

Online Panel discussion at Vienna Biennale for Change 2021

Forests have personalities. They come from different parts of the world, they host different species and come in many shapes and sizes. They are complex ecosystems, sources of timber, homes to indigenous people, storages of carbon; some or all of the above at the same time.

Forests have personalities. They come from different parts of the world, they host different species and come in many shapes and sizes. They are complex ecosystems, sources of timber, homes to indigenous people, storages of carbon; some or all of the above at the same time.

Being open to carefully considering more complex definitions of forests can form the institutional, legal and operational basis for forest monitoring, management and restoration that are more attuned to the urgent global actions needed to protect and restore forest ecosystems.

Centered around three projects looking at a scientific forest, an urban forest and a burnt managed forest, the panel will interweave these creative narratives with interventions by forest scientists, ecologists and anthropologists. This panel, co-organised with the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna (MAK) in the framework of the Vienna Biennale for Change 2021, will approach the question of conceptualising and defining forests through the lens of creative practice.

MEET THE PANEL
Andrea Botero is a Colombian born, Finland based designer and researcher. Her work engages with the possibilities and contradictions of participating in the creation of environments, tools and media that afford more relational and caring interactions among, and between people and their environment.

Jaz Hee-jeong Choi is Director of the Care-full Design Lab at RMIT, Melbourne, Australia. Through her research and practice, she explores ways to care-fully imagine and create more-than-human futures, often through co-creative and playful engagements.

Anab Jain is a designer, filmmaker and co-founder of Superflux and Professor of Design Investigations at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna. In her practice, Anab imagines and builds future worlds we can experience in the present moment. By creating new ways of seeing, being and acting, she hopes to inspire and challenge us to look critically at the decisions and choices we make today.

Katharina Lapin studied landscape planning before turning her research focus to biodiversity and invasive species. Katharina contributes to national and international nature conservation interests and specialist groups and is the head of the Department for Forest Biodiversity and Nature Conservation at the The Federal Forest Research Center (BFW).

Shubhendu Sharma, an industrial engineer, was working at Toyota in India when he met Japanese forest expert Akira Miyawaki, who’d arrived to plant a forest at the factory, using a methodology he’d developed to make a forest grow ten times faster than normal. Fascinated, Shubhendu interned with Akira, and grew his first successful forest on a small plot behind a house. Today, his company Afforestt promotes a standardised method for seeding dense, fast-growing, native forests in barren lands.

Panel moderator
Ruth Catlow is the artistic director of Furtherfield and the Decentralised Arts Lab DECAL, based in London. Her work as an artist, researcher and curator involves critical investigations of digital and networked technologies and their emancipatory potential.

Video interventions by
Nidia Gonzalez Pineros, researcher in Development Studies at University of Helsinki
Anna Lintunen, Adjunct professor in Tree Ecophysiology, University of Helsinki, INAR

Urban Biodiversity

Wood in the City

MAK FUTURE LAB

Das Thema Bäume und Holz erfährt gerade in jüngster Zeit große Aufmerksamkeit in den Sparten Architektur, Design und bildende Kunst und wird als zentraler Gestaltungsansatz für die Zukunft angesehen.

YouTube Livestream

Lately, the topic of trees and wood has been receiving a great deal of attention in the fields of architecture, design, and fine arts and it is considered the central design approach for the future. Trees as well as the climate-caring use of wood, for example for the construction of residential and office buildings, for commercial structures, or for temporary architecture, design, and art interventions in the public space, play an outstanding role for the future viability of cities. How do European urbanity and our culture of settlement change when trees or even the resource wood become a part of the city? In the context of the event Wood in the City, it will also be discussed how trees shape public space and public participation in a lively way, how wood construction is transforming the architectonic vocabulary, and which meaning trees as a resource as well as wood as a material have especially for Vienna in the global context.

Curator Guided Tour Ecologies and Politics of the Living

A guided tour with the co-curators Baerbel Mueller and Elisabeth Falkensteiner through the exhibition in the former Postsparkasse.

The exhibition shows artistic positions from Ghana, Nigeria, Southafrica, Thailand and Europe and explores the relationship between animate and inanimate environments, against the backdrop of a politically and economically interwoven world. Similar to ecological inquiries into the interrelations of all existing organisms and processes on planet earth, the artistic positions focus on the intersection of living beings, (in)organic structures and their economic, temporal and spatial conditions.

Climate Impact Day by Glacier – climate action made simple

Glacier's vision is to build the most effective global community for carbon reduction.

Glacier's vision is to build the most effective global community for carbon reduction. We take this complex problem and turn it into a super simple itinerary – a step-by-step guide for companies on their carbon reduction journey. It's science translated into actionable steps. It's saving the planet with the whole team on board.

Our annual flagship event, the Climate Impact Day, inspires and celebrates employee engagement. Companies tap into a large pool of modules, identify and implement solutions, and raise awareness for climate action. The event is accompanied by inspiring talks and presentations broadcasted live from the MAK.

SUBOTRON pro games: Games for Climate Care

Presentations and Panel

In times of upheaval and reorientation, the medium games is becoming more and more important in conveying content beyond pure entertainment.

In times of upheaval and reorientation, the medium games is becoming more and more important in conveying content beyond pure entertainment. In recent years, the term “serious games” has been increasingly rejected by game developers and academics due to its misinterpretation as “not entertaining” and “only for learning purposes” and its often poor execution. “Impact games” is beginning to establish itself as a term for digital games that influence attitudes and behavior, promote empathy, and contribute to solutions to social, economic, educational, scientific, and cultural challenges. In this segment, tasks in areas such as health, education, and ecology are increasingly becoming part of narrative content and gameplay.
For the VIENNA BIENNALE exhibition CLIMATE CARE: Reimagining Shared Planetary Futures at the MAK running until 3 October 2021, SUBOTRON curated five games from all over the world which interactively visualize issues around climate care topics to the visitors and inspire them to take joint action.

Presentations and Panel
Representatives of all games gather for presentations of their work and takes on impact games and climate care. The ensuing panel discusses their approaches and solutions on how to help saving the planet via interactive experiences with the audience. The international participants will be streamed, the locals are on site.

VIENNA DESIGN WEEK

15 years of “A City Full of Design”

The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is Austria’s largest curated design festival and takes place for the 15th time this year.

The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is Austria’s largest curated design festival and takes place for the 15th time this year. The festival, which shows year after year that Vienna is a “City Full of Design,” invites everyone—from heavy users to passersby—to discover something new. And all that with free admission. The festival focuses on the diversity of today’s concept of design and the benefits of design for society. Product, furniture, and industrial design, architecture, graphic and social design as well as experimental and digital approaches illustrate this in the form of an average of 230 events at over 40 venues during the 10 festival days.

Local potentials are networked internationally—to be experienced by participants and visitors. Proven festival formats meet progressive focal points, crucial additions come from numerous Program Partners.

This year the focus is on Vienna’s 20th district: Brigittenau. Come on over!

EAT LOVE @ VIENNA DESIGN WEEK

Festival Center VIENNA DESIGN WEEK @ Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1200 Vienna

PROGRAM EAT LOVE @ VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 1-3 Oct 2021 (PDF, in German)

More info and Livestream

A joint project by the Vienna Business Agency and the MAK

At the Vienna Business Agency, everything in 2020/21 revolves around how we want to eat. Under the motto “Let's talk food”, the VBA is analysing the entire food cycle – from the fields to the shops and, finally, to our plates – to explore how urban food supplies might look in future.

EAT LOVE. Tomorrow’s Food and Food Spaces takes the form of a prototype petrol station in a post-fossil fuel age. This mobile studio/petrol station is part of CLIMATE CARE. Reimagining Shared Planetary Futures, an exhibition at the MAK co-curated by Hubert Klumpner. Visitors can fill up their minds with new ideas and get involved themselves – not only at the Biennale but also at four other locations in Vienna as the mobile studio tours the city during the Biennale.

The dialogue surrounding the urgent issues of food supplies will continue with a symposium Planet Matters Symposium, which will delve into the questions raised by the EAT LOVE project in further detail.

Curator: Hubert Klumpner, Michael Walczak
Curatorial Team: Elisabeth Noever-Ginthör, Alice Jacubasch (Vienna Business Agency); Astrid Böhacker (MAK)

Natalia Domínguez Rangel (NL/CO)
is composer/sound artist based in Vienna and Amsterdam. Her work has been connected with architecture, acoustics, technology and nature. She is interested how sound affects and resonates with a body physiologically and psychologically, and how critical listening deepens, extends and set connections to other acoustic ecologies not only to the anthrophony.
